Sexteto Tabalá: Live from San Basilio de Palenque.

Director - Producer

Sexteto Tabalá is one of the most representative groups of Afro-Caribbean Colombian music. Originally from San Basilio de Palenque, one of the most important cultural centers for the African diaspora in northern South America.

Their music, Son Palenquero, is born from the fusion between Cuban Son and Colombian Cumbia. Cuban music came their town when foreign companies acquired concessions to exploit sugar cane in our territory. Palenqueros were hired to work on the plantations, where many Cubans also worked. This is how Cuban music reached the ears of "campesinos" and sugarcane workers like Rafael Cassiani, leading voice and composer of the group.
